Every year, cars with disguised license plates cost NYC $108 million

According to a recent analysis by City Comptroller Brad Lander, false and unclear license plates that were invisible to speed cameras cost New York City approximately $108 million in lost revenue in 2023.

Residents of New York claimed to see the issue everywhere.

“I see individuals advertising these sort of disguising things [for license plates], where it opens up or there’s a screen that runs over it, when I’m on the internet and on TikTok,” Ben Morabito stated.

Solomon Yang stated, “A few individuals simply apply tape over their license plates,” acknowledging that he has considered doing the same to save money, particularly when congestion pricing takes effect.
