An escaped Virginia inmate, Alder Marin-Sotelo, who was charged with the murder of a North Carolina sheriff’s deputy, has been captured in Mexico.
Marin-Sotelo was one of two Virginia inmates who escaped from Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville last Sunday
The other escapee, Bruce Callahan, who was being held on drug charges, left the prison later that day. Marin-Sotelo was taken into custody by Mexican authorities in the state of Guerrero on Thursday afternoon, according to the FBI in Charlotte, North Carolina. The investigation into Marin-Sotelo’s movements since his escape is ongoing. It is unclear how he was captured.
Marin-Sotelo was charged with murder in August 2022 after a North Carolina sheriff’s deputy, Ned Byrd, was killed while on duty.

Marin-Sotelo’s brother, Arturo Marin-Sotelo, was also charged with murder in Byrd’s killing. The FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service offered a combined $70,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Marin-Sotelo. Marin-Sotelo left the jail in a red or burgundy Ford Mustang, which the FBI is still trying to locate. Callahan and Marin-Sotelo were federal detainees and had no affiliations with the area or local charges.
