The 60-year-old, also known as Duane “Keffe D” Davis, faces a single count of murder with the use of a deadly weapon along with a gang enhancement, according to law enforcement officials.
Duane Keith Davis, one of the last living witnesses to the tragic drive-by shooting that claimed the life of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas back in 1996, has been formally charged with Shakur’s long-unsolved murder
This development marks a significant breakthrough in a case that has perplexed investigators and captivated the public for nearly three decades since the untimely death of the hip-hop icon on the Las Vegas Strip. A Nevada grand jury indictment against Duane Keith Davis was disclosed during a court hearing, confirming the news reported by The Associated Press and CBS Las Vegas affiliate KLAS.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill emphasized the importance of this case, dispelling any notion that Tupac Shakur’s murder wasn’t a priority for the police department. McMahill stated, “Our goal was always to hold those responsible for Tupac’s violent murder accountable.”
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department homicide Lieutenant Jason Johansson characterized Duane Keith Davis as the leader and shot-caller of the South Side Compton Crips, underscoring an ongoing feud between rival groups
The arrest of Duane Keith Davis came after a search of his wife’s home in Henderson in July, during which law enforcement officers seized items related to Shakur‘s murder, including computers, a cellphone, and a copy of Duane Keith Davis’ 2019 tell-all memoir, “Compton Street Legend.” In this memoir, Duane Keith Davis disclosed his involvement and cooperation with authorities during a closed-door meeting in 2010, where he traded information for the promise of leniency on drug charges he faced at the time.
The unexpected progress in this decades-old case follows Duane Keith Davis’s 2018 admission in a BET interview that he was present in the car during the attack and alluded to the source of the shots coming from the backseat. With Duane Keith Davis now facing charges, many hope that the pursuit of justice for Tupac Shakur will finally reach its conclusion.
