Democratic governors request that Congress not impose more job demands on social programs

A team of ten Democratic governors is urging federal legislators to reject measures in the Republican debt ceiling bill that will increase the amount of social safety net initiatives with employment criteria.

`The message, addressed to bipartisan congressional executives in both chambers, stated that whereas Medicare and Social Security would not be affected by any cuts, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Medicare, and private sector spending were “literally vital resources for millions of Americans worldwide.”

Democratic governors in Michigan Colorado’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer Delaware’s Governor Jared Polis Hawaii’s Governor John Carney Illinois’s Governor Josh Green and Maryland’s Governor J.B. Pritzker Minnesota’s Wes Moore governor New Mexico’s governor, Tim Walz North Carolina Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. The letter was signed by both Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper.

State governors are putting pressure after Republicans put forth their idea to increase the debt ceiling while reducing government spending.
