The president of the university system warned that allowing undocumented immigrants to make applications for jobs on any of its ten campuses would put the university and its students at “critical risk,” such as the possibility of criminal charges. On Thursday, the governing board of the University of California postponed a decision on the matter.

Amidst screams of “Cowards!” from many in the audience, the Board of Regents decided 9–6 to postpone debating the plan until 2025.

The University of California President, Michael Drake, informed the board prior to the vote that the student work plan’s suggested legal road was “not possible right now” and that putting the plan into action would put the institution and the people it serves at “significant risk.”

Drake stated that the measure would endanger students who are immigrants.
