A fire captain from the Croydon Fire Company sustained injuries while battling a blaze on Sunday, which is now under investigation as a suspected arson
The fire marshal believes the flames were deliberately set, causing significant damage to the building’s attic. Eyewitnesses captured video footage of the scene, revealing thick smoke billowing into the night sky. Surveillance footage also obtained by Action News shows the suspected arsonist igniting the fire. Croydon Fire Company responders swiftly arrived at Cedar Avenue shortly before 2:30 a.m.
During firefighting efforts in the attic, the floor collapsed, resulting in a 12-foot fall for the Croydon Fire Company captain. The injured captain was promptly transported to the hospital, where he received treatment for minor injuries before being released. Fire Marshal Kevin Dippolito emphasized the captain’s fortunate outcome, given the severity of the fall and the debris that fell on top of him.

Two families residing in the affected apartments were evacuated, with minor smoke damage reported. They are expected to return once the situation is resolved.
