Concerns have been expressed by a Catholic diocese in California in response to information that 2 “imposters” were using real priests’ names to pose as clergy.
The Diocese of Stockton, which serves the Central Valley area of the state, stated in an announcement released on Friday that the 2 people—whose true opinions have not been confirmed—have been requesting “birth documents from people taking part in these sacraments” and imposing “exorbitant fees” for sacraments, courses, and certifications. They have also been promoting issues related to the theft of identities and human trafficking.
The Catholic organization stated that Father José Adán González Estrada and Bishop Ral Gómez González, 2 legitimate priests in Mexico, were using their genuine names to conduct business in the Modesto area.
