Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz, a St. Mary’s High standout and the 2005 Arizona Player of the Year, has been discovered deceased in Phoenix on Monday, as reported by the Phoenix Police Department.
The cause of death remains undisclosed.
The Orioles selected Matusz as the fourth overall pick in the 2008 draft when he was just 37 years old.
He went on to play college baseball at San Diego after his time at St. Mary’s.
“A staple in our clubhouse from 2009-2016, Brian was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched,” the Orioles said in a statement .
“He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate, and always had a smile on his face. Brian’s family and loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.”
Matusz showcased his talent in 279 games for the Orioles throughout his career, spanning eight seasons. During his time with the team, he maintained an ERA of 4.85.
“I can confirm we responded to a dead body call at a home near 44th Street and Campbell Avenue” at about 2:45 p.m. MT Monday, Phoenix Police Sgt. Phil Krynsky said in a statement to NBC News . “The deceased person found was indeed 37-year-old Brian Matusz. Currently, this incident is being handled as a death investigation.”
In 2017, Matusz joined the Arizona Diamondbacks on a minor-league contract. He showcased his pitching skills in 11 games for the Reno Aces, the team’s Triple-A affiliate. Additionally, he had the opportunity to pitch for the Cubs in a single game during the 2016 season.
