Brandon Thompson, who initially posed as an innocent bystander, was apprehended on charges of sexual assault, reckless injury, and strangulation, according to Madison police.
A 26-year-old man identified as Brandon Thompson allegedly assaulted and raped a University of Wisconsin at Madison student, leaving her with life-threatening injuries
Chief Shon Barnes emphasized the need for justice in this “horrific” case during a press conference. The assault occurred in the early hours of the morning as the victim walked through the college town’s commercial district. Brandon Thompson reportedly inflicted severe harm on the young woman, including a broken jaw. Despite the brutality, he remained at the scene and engaged with a witness, deceitfully claiming he had just discovered the victim.
Brandon Thompson fled the scene before law enforcement arrived but was later identified through community home surveillance footage. Paige Valenta, the department’s assistant chief of investigative services, noted that this video evidence played a crucial role in linking Brandon Thompson to the assault.

Investigators are working to determine if these injuries are related to the crime. There is currently no known connection between Brandon Thompson and his victim.
The victim, in her twenties, is expected to recover from her injuries, though she was initially classified in critical condition. Campus police have urged students to utilize university safety resources and travel in groups, particularly at night. University police chief Kristen Roman emphasized that such assaults are exceptionally rare for the Midwestern city, calling for unity and support in the face of this tragedy.
