Schumer hinted at providing further comments after the meeting. With over half of the Democratic conference advocating for Senator Bob Menendez’s resignation, he faces a pivotal moment in his political career. The senator must persuade his peers on Thursday that he merits remaining in the Senate while contesting the charges.
Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner (D-VA), disclosed on Wednesday that he had refrained from commenting on the charges until hearing directly from Senator Bob Menendez. Warner described the charges as “extremely damning” and pledged to grant Senator Bob Menendez the courtesy of addressing the Democratic conference before expressing his stance.
The meeting’s agenda will also encompass discussions on how to handle Senator Bob Menendez’s access to classified briefings
Federal prosecutors have alleged that Senator Bob Menendez and his wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, exploited his role as the leading Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to wield influence with donors and benefit the Egyptian government in exchange for various forms of remuneration. Senator Bob Menendez, compelled to relinquish his Foreign Relations Committee chairmanship during the indictment, has rebuffed the charges as part of a broader “smear campaign” against him, vowing to combat them.
He vehemently maintained his innocence at a press conference on Monday, asserting his confidence in exoneration and accusing prosecutors of sensationalizing the allegations. On Wednesday, Senator Bob Menendez and his wife entered pleas of not guilty. Simultaneously, Schumer advanced a resolution unanimously appointing Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) as the new chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee in lieu of Menendez.
