Police Chief Scott Thurmond expressed concern that this could be a deliberate and targeted assault.
In a shocking incident, two Birmingham firefighters were shot and suffered serious injuries while on duty at a fire station in Birmingham, Alabama
The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. at Station 9, leaving the two Birmingham firefighters hospitalized. Fortunately, a third firefighter, who was present inside the building, escaped unharmed.
The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service disclosed the names of the wounded Birmingham firefighters as Jamel Jones and Jordan Melton. The two Birmingham firefighters were rushed to UAB Hospital, where Melton is currently in critical condition, while Jones is in serious condition, as updated on Wednesday night.
No arrests have been made, and the number of suspects involved remains uncertain, according to Chief Thurmond
Chief Thurmond expressed deep concern over the deliberate targeting of Birmingham firefighters, stating, “We don’t know why it would be a targeted attack, but that’s one of the things that we’re trying to determine at this point in time. It’s extremely unusual for someone to come to target one of our fire stations.” Thurmond also mentioned that it was customary for the back door of the fire station to be left open for public access, and the incident likely occurred during a shift change.
The authorities are actively investigating the incident to ascertain the motives behind this disturbing attack on Birmingham firefighters.
