August is officially designated as “Transgender History Month” in California

The entire month of August was declared “Transgender History Month” in San Francisco on August 24, 2021. The Transgender District and trans activist Jupiter Peraza’s work were responsible for this. The entire state of California has proclaimed August “Transgender History Month” as of September 6th, thus becoming one of the initial states in the US to do so.

Because of the Gene Compton Cafeteria revolt, August was chosen as “Transgender History Month.” Police in Compton, California, detained drag queens, trans women, and other LGBTQIA+ people in 1996. The LGBTQIA+ community’s go-to hangout, Compton’s, offered relief all through the night. An arrest was made after a drag queen threw her coffee cup in the face of a police officer. The riot then began from there.

Except for people who live in San Francisco, most people have forgotten about this moment in history. It is an opportunity to honor this significant struggle against prejudice to have “Transgender History Month” recognized in August. This essential tribute will be heading in 2024.
