Attorney General Kris Mayes strongly asserted on Wednesday that the city of Phoenix’s initiative to dispatch weapons to Ukrainian police would run afoul of state regulations

“Following a thorough examination by my office, it has been determined that Phoenix‘s ordinance contradicts state laws pertaining to firearm disposal,” stated Attorney General Kris Mayes in response to a grievance lodged by two state lawmakers. Attorney General Kris Mayes further remarked, “I am profoundly concerned by these (state) statutes. These regulations exhibit rigidity and, frankly, show insensitivity towards crime victims and communities grappling with gun-related violence.”

Earlier this year, the Phoenix City Council endorsed a proposal to furnish Ukrainian police with firearms from the city’s inventory

The weapons in question are purportedly “unclaimed handguns and shotguns,” and the scheme mirrors a similar effort undertaken by Miami, Florida, last year.

Attorney General Kris Mayes added, “Rather than leveling complaints against municipalities like Phoenix, members of the legislature would be better served by directing their efforts towards enacting judicious gun legislation.”
