The 16-year-old’s life was cut short when Lizbeth Medina’s body was found lifeless in the bathtub of her home by her mother earlier this week

The apprehended suspect, 23-year-old Rafael Govea Romero, was taken into custody on Saturday, facing charges of capital murder, as reported by the authorities. The arrest unfolded in Schulenburg, approximately 75 miles north of Edna, where the incident occurred. Law enforcement agencies, including the Texas Rangers and Edna police, collaborated in securing Romero’s capture. The suspect was promptly transported to the Jackson County Jail, according to a statement released by Edna Police Chief Rick Boone on Sunday.

Lizbeth Medina was slated to participate in a Christmas parade with her cheerleading squad in Edna on Tuesday, a plan that was tragically thwarted. Concerned when her daughter failed to make an appearance, Jacqueline Medina, the victim’s mother, embarked on a search, only to discover her lifeless in their apartment.

The breakthrough in the case came a day after the Edna Police Department released security photos depicting a person and vehicle of interest related to the homicide. The arrest of Romero occurred concurrently with a candlelight vigil held by classmates and community members in Edna, demonstrating the profound impact of Medina’s untimely death.

Chief Boone acknowledged the ongoing grief, emphasizing the need for support for Lizbeth Medina’s family and friends.

Details surrounding the relationship between the suspect and the victim remain undisclosed. Authorities have not clarified whether the attack was a random incident or if there was a prior connection between Lizbeth Medina and Rafael Govea Romero. The circumstances surrounding Medina’s death also remain vague, with an autopsy report pending release.

Jacqueline Medina, grief-stricken but resilient, expressed her desire for justice and answers. The community came together to honor Lizbeth’s memory, donning purple her favorite color at a school football game where she was posthumously recognized for her “kind heart” and generosity. Jacqueline Medina mourned the loss of her daughter, describing her as an “angel” taken from those who loved her dearly.
