Casey White, 39, expressed his love for the jail official, Vicky White, during the sentencing hearing and extended his apologies to her family.
A manhunt spanning three states ended tragically as an Alabama prisoner received a life sentence for orchestrating his escape with the assistance of a jail official who later took her own life
White, standing before the Lauderdale County courtroom, shared his anguish, stating that he felt like “the most hated man in the world.” He emphasized that Vicky White, despite not being related to him, was the first person to show genuine care in six years. He declared his affection for her and refused to besmirch her reputation, stating, “Vicky took me out because she said, ‘right was right. Wrong is wrong.’ She was the first person to show me affection. The first person to give me a hug in six years.”
While expressing remorse for the escape, White explained that Vicky White had yearned for a fresh start with him because she knew the truth about his character. He acknowledged the choices he had made, acknowledging that they had cost him his freedom and life. White was already serving a 75-year prison term for various charges, including attempted murder, and was awaiting a capital murder trial when the escape occurred in April 2022. After 11 days on the run, Casey White was apprehended in Evansville, Indiana, while Vicky White tragically died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
White pleaded guilty to the escape charge, leading to the dismissal of a felony murder charge related to Vicky White’s death
He accepted a life sentence without the possibility of parole as the maximum penalty. Vicky White’s family members were present in the courtroom during the sentencing hearing. White also received a directive to notify the state if he, his family, or his lawyers receive any offers for books, movies, or other financial opportunities connected to the highly publicized escape. The proceeds from such endeavors would be allocated toward his defense expenses.
