Rosalynn Carter, the previous first lady, has dementia, her family members said on Tuesday.
Carter, who is 95 years old, continues to live with his 98-year-old brother Jimmy Carter, who was getting hospice care at the Plains house until early this year.
The family released a statement through the Carter Center, the international humanitarian organization the couple established in 1982, barely 2 years after Jimmy Carter’s overwhelming loss. “She proceeds to reside peacefully at residence with her husband, embracing spring in Plains and visiting with dear ones,” the statement said.
The Carters have been together for almost 77 years and are the longest-married initial couple in American history.
Rosalynn Carter’s family pointed out in their statement that she has devoted her lengthy public career to fighting for people with mental illnesses, their loved ones, and those who are in caring relationships with them.
