ST. LOUIS – A mother’s life was shattered when she returned home to find her 9-month-old daughter and the child’s father dead in what authorities are calling a murder-suicide.
A Routine Trip Turns into a Devastating Discovery
On March 6, 2025, Micah Lawery left her home for a quick errand to a beauty supply store, leaving her baby, Ophelia Lawery-Daniels, in the care of her father, 21-year-old Zacchaeus Daniels. When she returned, she was met with a sight that will haunt her forever, both Ophelia and Daniels were dead on the living room couch.
“Burned into my brain,” Lawery described the horrifying moment.
Panicked, she called 911. When first responders arrived, they pronounced Daniels dead at the scene. Ophelia was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the case as a murder-suicide.
Remembering Baby Ophelia
Ophelia, a bright and sassy little girl, had a personality that lit up the room, according to her mother.
“She was feisty and full of life,” Lawery said. “She had such a big personality for a baby.”
Now, instead of celebrating milestones like her first birthday, Lawery is planning a funeral.
A Tragic Reminder About Mental Health
Lawery revealed that Daniels had been struggling with mental health issues, though she never expected him to hurt their daughter.
“If you’re feeling lost, if you’re struggling, please reach out for help,” Lawery pleaded. “Your life is worth living. Don’t ever think this is the only option.”
The tragedy has sparked conversations about mental health awareness, especially among young parents who may feel overwhelmed and unsupported.

As Lawery grieves the unimaginable loss of her baby, the community has stepped up to help. A friend has set up a GoFundMe to cover funeral expenses, and messages of love and support continue to pour in.
