A $109 million Botticelli painting made by Sandro Botticelli went missing for almost 50 years after being forgotten by authorities, wherein the missing Botticelli painting depicts the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus sitting on her lap.
According to a report published in New York Post, the missing Botticelli painting was first hung in a Roman Catholic church before the church was caught on fire and ended up later in a Santa Maria la Carità church, which was eventually damaged by an earthquake, leading to the Botticelli painting going to a Somma family.
After the Botticelli painting went into the care of the Somma family, authorities constantly checked its condition in their private home and constantly advised them to take good care of the Botticelli painting; however, it was eventually reported as missing after authorities forgot to check it.

Missing Botticelli Painting Found in Southern Italian Home After Nearly 50 Years Since It Was First Hung
After a thorough investigation, the missing Botticelli painting was finally found in a Southern Italian home, still with the Somma family, who have always taken care of the Botticelli painting in their home and cleared of any criminal charges due to the legal title they held of the painting.
However, the Botticelli painting that went missing for almost 50 years is expected to be exhibited again in a national museum in Naples after its restoration, CNN reported.
