U.S. acknowledges Taiwan as a sovereign state and uses the FMF for such cases
The transfer was explained to Congress by the U.S. State Department as a step to strengthen Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities and increase maritime security and domain awareness. Contrary to Xi Jinping, China’s contention that Taiwan is a part of its territory, the U.S. acknowledges Taiwan as a sovereign state and uses the FMF for such cases.
Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, condemned the U.S. military transfer, calling it a grave violation of international law and a danger to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Xi Jinping of China had already expressed its strong opposition to the U.S.’s extraordinary military transfer to Taiwan, which Beijing sees as a breach of the “one-China principle.”
Beijing has frequently stated that it opposes providing Taiwan with any kind of defense assistance. It asked Washington to stop arming Taiwan and escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
Xi Jinping has been indicating that its military is prepared for a potential battle with Taiwan. Recently, an eight-part documentary series about the People’s Liberation Army that demonstrated the nation’s readiness for a hypothetical attack on Taiwan was broadcast in mainland China.
