Military Service and Academics
Mathers momentarily abandoned acting while he was an adolescent in order to focus on his high school activities after achieving the age of majority. When he attended Sherman Oaks’ Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California, Beaver, and the Trappers, a band he led, were in high demand.
At the age of 18, while still enrolled in high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves, serving until his graduation in 1970, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. Afterward, he attended the University of California at Berkeley and finished with a BA in philosophy in 1973.
Acting Career
Mathers returned to acting in 1978 after a break to work as a commercial bank loan officer and real estate developer. In the same year, he appeared on the television show “Flying High” and in a performance of the play “Boeing, Boeing” in Kansas City with old “Leave it to Beaver” co-star Tony Dow.
This was followed by an 18-month tour of “So Long, Stanley,” which Mathers performed with Dow. When he was a young man, he was a disc jockey in Anaheim, California, and he appeared in a television movie with actors Philip MacHale and Lee Purcell called “The Girl, the Gold Watch, and Dynamite.”
He resumed his role as the Beaver in the television reunion movie “Still the Beaver,” which featured the majority of the original cast, including Mathers. Beaver’s new series premiered on Disney Channel in 1984 and was picked up by TBS for broadcast syndication after the film’s success.
