Alleged hate crime and assault with a deadly weapon, detained by the Beverly Hills police

A belt allegedly struck an elderly man on the head around 9 a.m. Saturday near North Rexford Drive and North Santa Monica Boulevard.

Jarris Jay Silagi, 44, faced charges of lethal weapon, “attempt robbery,” hate crime, and elder abuse at Los Angeles County Jail.

After the attack on Saturday, in which the suspect was accused of making antisemitic remarks to a person who was accompanied by his spouse, the perpetrator of the attack escaped from the scene. However, a senior forensic specialist with the Beverly Hills Police Department was able to identify a male resembling the circulated description, which led to the identification and subsequent apprehension of a person who matched the description that was made public. The victim, who acquired a laceration on his head, was attended by the Beverly Hills Fire Department at the location and didn’t need further medical intervention at the moment.

Silagi was detained at Los Angeles County Jail with a lethal weapon, “attempt robbery,” hate crime, and elder abuse charges. Legal proceedings are scheduled for December 12th at Los Angeles Airport Court. It was unclear whether Silagi has legal representation for these charges.

Police Chief Mark Stainbrook’s statement said that the suspect was promptly apprehended by authorities and was being held in custody. This abhorrent display of hostility, which is directed at an individual from their community, shall not be accepted. This is the latest incident to happen since the October 7 war against Israel and Hamas.
