Meet Instagram’s Creator Kevin Systrom
A computer programmer and entrepreneur, Kevin Systrom was born on December 30, 1983, in Holliston, Massachusetts. In Concord, Massachusetts, he got his first exposure to computer programming at Middlesex School. His fascination with computer programming was piqued while he was creating his own Doom 2 level. In 2006, he graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Science in Management Science and Engineering.
Systrom put his programming skills to use when he hatched the concept of Burbn, a service that connects social games with physical check-ins.

It’s hard to imagine how he came up with this idea, but it all stemmed from his girlfriend’s reluctance to upload her vacation images taken with an iPhone 4 camera because of their low quality. To fix this, the filter must be used to improve the photo’s quality. In response to this, Systrom came up with the X-pro II filter, which is still used on Instagram to this day.
Systrom left his job to focus on Burbn, which he then turned into a business. To his astonishment, he obtained $500k in seed funding from Andreessen Horowitz and Baseline Ventures. Systrom met these two investors during a startup party in Silicon Valley, and they became important early investors in the company’s development. Burbn was founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger in San Francisco.
So, who controls Instagram today, and why?
To begin with, let’s take a look at Instagram’s 12-year history. Two computer programmers, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger co-founded Instagram in 2010. They came up with the name Burbn for their location-based app. As a result of this, the duo decided to rebrand Burbn as Instagram, a photo-sharing app.
To compete with the likes of Snapchat, Facebook has added new features like stories to its Instagram platform. According to the stats: Facebook is the world’s most popular social network, and Instagram is the fourth most popular social media site.

What is Meta?
Is Meta the new owner of Instagram now? In a legal sense, Facebook no longer owns Instagram. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in October 2021 that the newly founded “Meta” will become the owner of Facebook and Instagram, among its other businesses, much like Google did with Alphabet.
There is now a parent company called Meta that owns Facebook, as well as other popular apps like Instagram and WhatsApp. An official news release refers to the Meta brand as an umbrella term for several different apps and technologies.
“Bring the metaverse to life and help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses,” Meta, the company that owns Instagram, says. As new technologies like the metaverse touch our lives, we may expect to see major changes on Instagram in the years to come.
