However, for some Apple customers, even two million apps aren’t enough. However, unlike Android, iOS does not permit the installation of third-party apps or app stores, so users are apparently limited to what is available in the official App Store. Unless, of course, you hack your iPhone or jailbreak.
To put it simply, jailbreaking an iPhone or iPod Touch allows you to install third-party software in place of or with modifications to core features of Apple’s iOS. As a result, you can do a lot more with your iPhone or iPad than Apple generally allows. You can change the appearance and feel of the software on your phone, add new apps, and even switch to a different operating system if you so choose. While jailbreaking an iOS device is a complicated process, it allows committed users to unlock additional features for their iPhone or iPad Touch. However, there are also potential downsides to this.
These iOS 14 tricks aren’t likely to apply to iPads running iPadOS because of the iPad’s departure from iOS. However, you can still jailbreak previous iPads running iOS, as well as any iPad not running iPadOS.
A Guide to Jailbreaking
By “jailbreaking” your iPhone, you remove the restrictions set by Apple. The App Store will still work, but you’ll have access to a plethora of additional features and retailers. In the past, jailbreaking was required for nearly all iPhone customizations and even for running apps in the background.
Since iOS has progressed and Apple has included numerous capabilities that were previously solely available to the jailbreaking community, jailbreaking has declined in popularity. Still, jailbreaking can be helpful for a number of reasons, including the ability to install and run apps that aren’t available in the App Store and the possibility of eventually unlocking your iPhone so you can use it with a different carrier.
Keep in mind that once you’ve jailbroken your iPhone, you can no longer use Apple’s built-in software update tools to upgrade to a new iOS version. New features and critical security upgrades are unavailable to you at this time.
To put it mildly, updating iOS will undo your jailbreak and force you to start over. This is predicated on the fact that a jailbreak exists for the more recent iOS version, which is not always the case given how long it typically takes for the jailbreaking community to catch up after Apple releases an iOS update.
Worst case scenario: an iOS update breaks your jailbreak, forcing you to restore to factory settings and start over from scratch, losing all of your data in the process. A software update has the potential to “brick” your iPhone, making it completely unusable.
First, make sure you’re using the most recent version of iOS on the correct device.
Apple does not approve of jailbreaking in general, and most jailbreaking programs for newer iPhones employ exploits to gain access to the device. This means that every time Apple releases a new iOS version, it often closes these doors, forcing the jailbreaking community to discover a new way to breach Apple’s security and get into the iPhone in order to install their own bespoke operating system modifications.

How to see what version of iOS is installed on your iPhone or iPod Touch:
- First, launch the device’s settings interface.
- Secondly, select the “General” tab.
- Select the About tab.
- Look in the second row next to Software Version to see your iOS version. If you press this field, you’ll be able to see the device’s internal build number, which may lead you to a more targeted jailbreak solution.
- On the third row, next to Model Name, you’ll see the model of your device.
- Check the iOS jailbreaking article on Wikipedia to learn whatever tools are available, if any, for your device model and iOS version.
Back up your data
It is recommended that you make a backup of your smartphone before attempting to jailbreak it. As we discussed before, jailbreaking your iPhone has the risk of causing serious problems that will require you to restore it from scratch if anything goes wrong. First, make a copy of everything you want to keep before you delete it from your hard drive or cloud storage. This includes your music, apps, movies, and more. In this way, you can undo the effects of the jailbreak by using the device’s built-in restore function.
First Step: Your iPhone or iPod Touch will automatically back up to iCloud once a day if you have a large enough storage plan. Go to Settings > (Your Apple ID name) > iCloud > iCloud Backup to view the current backup status or initiate a manual backup. To initiate a new backup, just tap the Back Up Now button, which will display the time of your most recent successful backup.
Second Step: You can use iTunes to create a backup of your device on a Mac or Windows computer. Even if you already use iCloud for backups, this is still an excellent idea. Connect your iPhone to your computer with the USB-to-Lightning cable, launch iTunes, and choose your device from the left-hand menu. If you need to make a new backup of your computer, you can do it immediately by clicking the Back Up Now button.
Apple has gradually phased out iTunes in favor of dedicated apps for Music, TV, Podcasts, and so on, so you’ll find these features in the Finder app if you’re using macOS Catalina or later.

Jailbreaking an older iPhone with any iOS version
To successfully jailbreak an older iPhone, the program checkra1n is your best bet. This exploits a hardware flaw present in all iOS devices with an A5 to A11 chipset, which includes the iPhone 4S, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, as well as every iPhone issued by Apple between 2011 and 2017. Since checkra1n uses a hardware attack, it is compatible with nearly all versions of iOS, even the most recent iOS 14 builds, and Apple will never be able to fix this vulnerability. Checkra1n only works with iPhone 5s and newer devices, however, the exploit works all the way back to the iPhone 4S.
checkra1n is best utilized on a Mac for its ease of use. The procedure is as follows:
Step 1: In the first place, get checkra1n.
Step 2: Locate the DMG file you downloaded and open it by double-clicking on it.
Step 3: Open the Applications folder on your Mac and drag the checkra1n icon there to install the program.
Step 4: Navigate to your Mac’s Applications folder and look for the checkra1n app.
Step 5: Select Open from the menu that appears after right-clicking (or CTRL-clicking) the checkra1n application. Don’t click the icon twice.
Step 6: A dialogue box will appear, explaining that macOS is unable to validate the developer. Please confirm that you want to open the app by clicking Open. If an Open button doesn’t appear, select Cancel; retrace your steps to ensure you right-clicked checkra1n rather than double-clicking it.
Step 7: Turn off Face ID or Touch ID on your iOS 14 iPhone X or iPhone 8 before proceeding with the jailbreak.
Step 8: Using a USB to Lightning connector, link your iOS device to your Mac.
Step 9: You will examine the display of your iPhone. A prompt asking you to trust your computer means that you need to enter your device’s passcode when prompted.
Step 10: Your smartphone should be detected by the checkra1n app, and its compatibility with the app displayed.
Step 11: To begin jailbreaking, click the Start button.
Step 12: You’ll be prompted to put your iPhone into “DFU mode.” Connect your iPhone to your Mac and press the side and volume down keys simultaneously for at least 10 seconds. Release the side button but keep the volume button held for another five seconds before the Apple logo shows. Checkra1n ought to find your gadget mechanically.
Step 13: checkra1n will begin the jailbreaking process automatically after it has found your device.
Step 14: To finish the jailbreak, launch the checkra1n loader app that should have appeared on your home screen. Simply click on it to unlock it.
Step 15: Install the package management Cydia from within the checkra1n app. Additional software for your jailbroken gadget can be downloaded through Cydia.
