The Several States Offer Stimulus Payments to Combat Inflation

Several states have either passed laws or are contemplating proposals to provide supplemental stimulus cheques to inhabitants of the states in which they reside.

Washington

There will be checks sent to millions of individuals in more than a dozen states this year as inflation increases the cost of daily goods. Depending on their budgets, many states are able to issue these payments because they have extra money. It’s not uncommon for these payments to be referred to as “tax rebate cheques.”

The checks are reminiscent of the three federal stimulus checks that were sent to Americans during the first two years of the coronavirus outbreak by the federal government. Stay-at-home policies had kept many individuals from their jobs, and the government was trying to keep the economy from stalling by handing out these checks to those who needed them.

As a result, this latest wave of payments will be less broad than previous ones and may differ in the amount granted to citizens of each state. These payments are coming from state governments, however. However, in 2022, more states are expected to adopt the cash-back plan. By the end of July, at least 16 states had either enacted or are currently approving stimulus cheques.

California

Approximately 23 million Californians will get Inflation Relief payments totaling up to $1,050, signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom in late June. Under the plan, the great majority of Californians would receive some type of relief, ranging from $200 to $1,050, depending on income level and household size.

Georgia

Bills authorizing the distribution of more than $2 billion in state budget surpluses to the people of Georgia were signed into law by Governor Kemp. Taxes in Georgia can be paid in three different ways, depending on how the household files its taxes. $250 for single tax-filers; $375 for heads-of-household; $500 for married couples filing jointly

Maine

There were approximately 858,500 people in Maine who received $850 relief cheques because their federal adjusted gross income was less than $100,000 (if they were single) or $200,000 (if they were married and filing separately) or $150,000 (if they were filing as the head of household).

New Mexico

According to the New Mexico Department of Taxation and Revenue, taxpayers will receive various rebates in 2022.

Hawaii

According to Gov. David Ige’s administration, Hawaii taxpayers and their families are also eligible for a refund from the federal government. In late August 2022, the state’s Department of Taxation expects to begin processing refunds.

A total of $300 will be given to single taxpayers and couples making less than $100,000 a year, while a total of $100 will be given to single taxpayers and couples making more than $100,000.

Idaho

In March 2022, the state began sending tax refunds of $75 per taxpayer and each dependant, or 12 percent of their income tax amount, whichever was greater.

Illinois

As early as 2022, residents of Illinois who satisfy specific criteria will be eligible for a one-time refund of their individual income and property taxes.

Those filing separately will get a $50 refund, while those filing jointly will get a $100 refund. There will also be rebates of up to $300 per family member, or $100 for each of the three members of the family.

New Jersey

Recipients of New Jersey’s Middle-Class Tax Rebate Program began receiving their checks on July 2. Those who filed a 2020 income tax return and claimed at least one dependent kid with a tax balance of $1 or more are eligible for the tax rebate.

For a maximum of $500, the rebate is based on what you owe in taxes. Tax refunds will be provided in the form of a paper check in addition to the electronic refund.

Indiana

An automatic refund statute that was triggered by last year’s big surplus, which was augmented by federal COVID-19 relief assistance, is slowly dispersing $125-per-taxpayer reimbursements. GOP Gov. Eric Holcomb’s proposal for a second wave of refund payments from the state government’s budget surplus is being considered by legislators.

Virginia

The state legislature of Virginia has approved a one-time tax rebate of $250 for individuals and $500 for married couples.

A refund will not be issued until the end of September 2022, according to state tax officials. After July 1, those who are qualified for a rebate and have submitted their taxes will “likely” receive it in September or October.

Delaware

People in Delaware will receive one-time direct payments of $300 per adult resident (or $600 for married couples) while they confront “increased prices at the grocery store and gas pump,” according to the state Department of Finance.

Massachusetts

More than half a million low-wage workers in the state of Massachusetts have received $500 from the state government. Payments were made to around 480,000 people in March 2022, and another 330,000 people in June 2022, according to estimates.

New York

When New York began mailing out a one-year scheme in June to offer homeowners in 2022 property tax relief, it was under the guise of a pilot project. Instead of waiting until the fall of 2022, state officials decided to send them out earlier than originally expected.

South Carolina

By the end of 2022, citizens of South Carolina will be eligible for a one-time tax reimbursement of up to almost $800.

Florida

Christina Pushaw, a spokeswoman for the governor’s office, tweeted that 59,000 families will get a one-time payment of $450 per child as part of the governor’s new budget. A total of $59,000 will be distributed to the 59,000 families who qualify throughout the state of Florida. During a recent visit to Tampa, Florida, Casey DeSantis stated that payments are available to foster families, adoptive families, and single parents.

Each state has its own set of rules for tax rebates

Those who earn up to $273,470 a year in combined income tax and $164,000 a year in single income tax are eligible for a $2,000 stipend from the state of Minnesota’s governor. However, the state legislature has not yet authorized the idea.

Will the federal government issue a fourth round of stimulus funds?

It appears that the federal government will not be sending out a fourth stimulus payment in July 2022. A request for a fourth stimulus payment from the Biden administration has yet to be submitted to Congress, but the looming midterm elections in 2022 almost guarantee that any such proposal will be shot down before it even gets off the ground.
