Between March 2020 and February 2022, the U.S. government injected $5 trillion in stimulus money into the economy. A total of $1.8 trillion was distributed to individuals and families, while only $1.7 trillion was allocated to businesses. In contrast, the federal government’s appetite to provide more direct aid is decreasing.

Many people in the United States are still struggling to get by. New stimulus ideas have been suggested, ranging from a fourth stimulus check to monthly payments of $2,000 for each person. Due to an increase in coronavirus-related hospitalizations and deaths, the further stimulus may be needed in the near future.

State governments, meanwhile, are taking advantage of the federal government’s seeming absence from the stimulus business and putting their own plans into motion. Some states are making an attempt to help their inhabitants, even if they don’t all get their way.
California
For the past two years, California has had a budget surplus, and the state’s inhabitants have relished the rewards. In 2021 and early 2022, households received direct stimulus funds, and in 2022, Governor Gavin Newsom proposes issuing debit cards with a $400 value to assist offset the rising cost of gas.
As of July, residents will receive one card for each automobile they own, up to a maximum of two (or $800) per household.
Illinois
Proposals from the Illinois Democratic Party call for each household to get a stimulus check of $100, with $50 going to each child under the age of 18. As part of the idea, up to $300 in property tax relief checks would be granted, grocery taxes and gas tax increases would be deferred for six months, and school supply taxes would be halted for 10 days in August.
Idaho
Joe Biden promised $2,000 stimulus checks, but Americans are spending $2,000 more on gas instead.

A tax rebate of up to $75 or 12 percent will be given to Idaho taxpayers in 2020.
Maine
Janet Mills, the governor of Maine, has proposed an $850 billion stimulus program as a way to boost the economy. The state’s budget surplus of $682 million will be used to cover the costs of the project.
The state of New Mexico is
Residents of New Mexico who file combined returns and make less than $150,000 in annual income will be eligible for a $500 tax credit. Those earning less than $75,000 a year are eligible for a $250 rebate on their taxes.
Other incentives include a $1,000 bonus for full-time hospital nurses, a $175-per-child refundable child tax credit, a three-year partial income tax exemption for military retirees, and an extension of the solar market tax credit equal to 10% of the qualifying purchase and installation costs.

Indiana
A deal agreed by Indiana lawmakers would make the state’s $125 stimulus payment available to an additional 450,000 low-income people.
Georgia
A bill signed by Governor Brian Kemp recently provides Georgians with stimulus funds. Individuals would get a $250 refund, while heads of households would get $375, and married couples filing jointly would get $500 back in tax savings.
In New Jersey
Taxpayers who file using a tax identification number, rather than a Social Security number, are eligible for $500 stimulus funds, according to New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy.
Virginia

In Virginia, legislators are trying to iron out the problems of a $300 stimulus payment that would be given to all state residents. The state’s grocery tax may be reduced or eliminated, and the state’s 26.2-cent gas tax might be suspended for a year under two other ideas.
The city of New York is
In an effort to help the state’s low- and middle-income families, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed a $425 to $970 property tax credit. Along with other measures like tax relief for businesses, the state has also suspended the state tax on motor fuels until the end of December.

Hawaii
It was David Ige who first put out the idea of a $100 tax credit for all individuals and families in January of this year. For those earning less than $100,000, the Hawaii House Committee on Finance approved a $300 payout, while those earning more than $100,000 received a $100 check.
