Rays shortstop Wander Franco has received an official summons from Dominican Republic authorities after a search was conducted at two residences, including his mother’s home in Baní, Peravia province, and his residence in Villa Real. The investigation centers around allegations of Franco having inappropriate relationships with minors. ESPN reported that the 22-year-old has been instructed to attend a meeting with the prosecutor’s office, scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday. Failure to comply with this formal summons may result in further legal action.
The nature of Tuesday’s searches and the reason for the delay until after Christmas remain unclear, with local authorities providing minimal information. William Aish, sports editor of El Nuevo Diario in the Dominican Republic, noted that authorities have not disclosed the specifics of the investigation, stating only that “we are investigating.” Witnesses to the searches reported that authorities shared contact information with Franco’s family.
The 22-year-old had previously been under investigation by Dominican authorities and Major League Baseball for four months, leading to his placement on administrative leave during the season under the league’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy.
