Joel Embiid, the reigning NBA MVP from the Philadelphia 76ers, delivered an outstanding performance against the Houston Rockets on Monday, scoring 41 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in a 124-115 victory. However, Embiid, who recently returned from a lingering knee injury, faces a challenge in meeting the NBA’s new games played requirements for award eligibility.
New NBA Games Played Requirements
Joel Embiid showcased his prowess with a remarkable performance against the Houston Rockets, marking his return to the court after a hiatus since January 5 due to a lingering knee injury. His 41-point, 10-rebound contribution was crucial to the 76ers’ victory.
The NBA introduced new gameplay requirements as part of its initiative to prevent players from resting during the regular season. To be eligible for awards, including the MVP, players must meet the minimum games played threshold, set at 65 games with a few exceptions. Embiid faces the challenge of staying within the limit to defend his MVP title.
Having missed 10 games in the 2023-24 season, he can only afford to miss seven more to be eligible to defend his MVP title. In response, Embiid emphasizes prioritizing his health over pursuing a second consecutive MVP and is willing to accept the outcome if he falls below the minimum number of games played.

Despite the challenges, Joel Embiid is having a career-best season, displaying efficiency, great defense, and impressive scoring. Averaging 34.6 points per game in 34.1 minutes, he remains a crucial asset for the 76ers. However, his playoff performance and ability to stay healthy in postseasons have been persistent concerns throughout his career.
