Riley Gaines, a former NCAA All-American swimmer at Kentucky that has pushed for maintaining equality in women’s athletics, posted some encouraging texts from parents in California on Thursday.
A transgender girl runner who placed 2nd in a sectional Meet of Champions and advanced to the state championships late this week sparked discussion throughout the weekend in the Golden State.
Gaines recounted letters she had received from her parents.
“These are just a handful of the numerous comments I’ve gotten from Californian girls and their parents about how their sport (T&F) has been corrupted by unimpressive males. They experience helplessness. How is it possible to read them and believe what is going on is okay? It’s harassment and prejudice against women at its best,” Gaines tweeted.
Gaines was referred to as “inspiration” in the unidentified texts, while transgender athletes competing in women’s sports were labeled as “unfair” in another.
