Ingenuity’s Mars Mystery: NASA Analyzes Data After Communication Loss During Test
After an unplanned landing, the mission was meant to test the helicopter’s systems. Ingenuity reported a successful climb to the intended height of the Perseverance rover, which relays helicopter data to Earth. After losing communication during the descent, NASA authorities analyze data to contact the Mars chopper.
Ingenuity and Perseverance, who landed on Mars in February 2021, collaborate. On Mars, Perseverance searches for signs of past life, while Ingenuity scouts. Perseverance is out of sight of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab’s silent helicopter, but the team is considering moving it closer for a visual assessment.
Ingenuity on Mars has persevered despite this setback. Although only five flights were expected on the hard Martian surface, the 4-pound helicopter has completed almost 70 flights. A similar communication loss occurred last summer, raising the likelihood of reestablishing contact.
