Review of Sanditon Season 3 Episode 3

On Sanditon Season 3 Episode 3, Episode Three, an important trial, a surprise appearance, a shooting party, and a confession make for an exciting, edge-of-your-seat hour.

To Georgiana’s dismay, her day in court has arrived and she is once more the talk of London. Yet if she wants to clear her name and protect her fortune, this is the only way to do it.

It takes a lot of fortitude to sit through those courtroom moments and put up with Lockhart and his lawyer for Georgiana’s abuse and lying. You’ll be on edge throughout every scene, hoping that everything turns out the way that everyone watching hopes it will for the young woman.

Disparaging those who are unable to defend themselves, including Sidney and her parents, is a decision. It’s simple to despise them, placing viewers squarely in Georgiana’s shoes and eliciting all the rage and sadness she must be experiencing right now.

I find Samuel’s role in this to be interesting since Charlotte pushes him to stand up for Georgiana in court because she needs to be protected. He becomes motivated by her speech and agrees to do something that will help Georgiana win the case with ease.

Georgiana finds herself in a painful situation as a result of the trial’s strange pace, which seems to be moving through the proceedings at breakneck speed. What does that mean for her search for a good marriage, with her vow to shut herself off from any form of gossip or potential sorrow and further heartache? I’m interested to see where this goes.

In the meantime, Tom is resuming his unpleasant behaviors, such as not giving others around him a second consideration and only considering his own business and profits. Even though they would be displacing the very people that make the town what it is, Mr. Pryce’s constant insistence and Lady Denham’s unwavering support for the idea serve as an even greater incentive for Tom to carry out their plan.

As Alexander questions Tom, Mr. Pryce, and Mary about what knocking down Old Town will mean for the community, Mary expresses her support for keeping Old Town as it is currently, which is one of my favorite moments of the episode.

When Alexander finally confesses his love for Charlotte, it is the moment we have all been waiting for since that picnic from last season.

His speech may rank beside any hero from a historical drama in terms of epicness. It’s a tender moment when he pours his heart out while pleading with Charlotte to stay.

The confession and passionate kiss, set against that cliffside, have cemented their status as the series’ most memorable romantic moments.

With only three episodes left in the season, it goes without saying that Charlotte and Alexander will not find the happily ever after we all desire as she rejects and runs away from him. Her justification for having to reject him is similar to what we’ve heard before.

Only now, as I sit here and write this, does it feel like Sidney made decisions that were best for his family rather than for himself.

Anyone else see that, or am I interpreting the explanation too broadly?

The episode is entertaining to watch even though the story’s turns are predictable, and many characters make good progress toward the finale.

Unrelated thoughts

  • Lady Montrose continues giving BIG Mrs. Bennett energy in, at times, hilarious and frustrating ways.
  • Lady Susan and Samuel s team-up is a bit of a predictable story, but it is honestly delightful that they are going all in on this aspect, playing into the clich and having fun with it.
  • I am unsure how I feel about the Edward/Augusta arc, especially given his history and ability to play the innocent. I will say it s intriguing in that the audience is about as clueless as to his true intentions as everyone was in the last two seasons.
  • Arthur s face, when he picks up on what Harry is subtly insinuating about his sexual identity, breaks my heart to see these two struggling and having to hide who they are or even realize what they want in a partner.
  • I did not have Otis returning on my final season BINGO card but I certainly hope this isn t the last we see of him!
