On Tuesday, a 34-year-old man from Idaho who was wounded in a Russian attack in Luhansk succumbed to his wounds and died.

According to The Washington Post, a State Department spokeswoman acknowledged the death of an American in Donbas without disclosing the victim’s identity.

Partridge, a former infantryman in the U.S. Army, felt “spiritually called” to help the Ukrainian troops protect their country from invading Russian forces, according to Jenny Corry, his sister.

In April, he boarded a one-way flight to Poland with a backpack full of military equipment, including body armor and a helmet.

There are five little children who will be left behind by Partridge.

His father, Dennis Partridge, posted on Facebook on Saturday that his son had been severely injured in an explosion from a Russian tank and was currently in a coma.

According to Corry, Partridge was born into a military family and spent his childhood in Rexburg, where he enjoyed off-roading in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter.

After finishing high school, he joined the United States Army and served as a turret gunner and armored vehicle driver in Baghdad as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007.

According to Corry, Partridge was wounded in the head by shrapnel when Russian battle vehicles attacked the city of Severodonetsk in the Luhansk region, where he was stationed with his unit.
