African Catholic priests, particularly those from Madagascar, rejected Pope Francis’ acceptance of same-sex couples receiving blessings by the Catholic Church on Thursday, claiming they deny to follow the pontiff’s pronouncement because these marriages are “against to the will of God.”
In opposition to Francis’ pronouncement on December 18, which permitted priests to congratulate same-sex couples, Congolese Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo approved the statement in the name of the symposium of African national bishops conferences, taking a position that was almost continental in scope.
Mid-December saw the announcement of a shift in Vatican policy, which stated that “individuals desiring God’s love and forgiveness shouldn’t be given ‘an exhaustive moral analysis’ in order to get it.”
