The federal Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program in Los Angeles has been shown to consistently and alarmingly fail, resulting in hundreds of vouchers remaining wasted as the city’s homeless crisis worsens. This information was discovered by the ABC7 Eyewitness News investigation team.
According to Jazzmin Parson, that awaited almost 1 year and a half for her Section 8 voucher, “I have observed those who receive a coupon and they simply are unable to utilize it, so they find themselves wasting their voucher and having to begin all over.”
The main issue facing the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA), according to officials, is the shortage of landlords willing to take in Section 8 tenants.
Carlos Van Natter, the director of Section 8 at HACLA, stated “that it was extremely difficult for his residents to discover an owner and find a place to live. A tenant with a Section 8 voucher is not compelled to be accepted by the landlord. Numerous of them do as well, as we expect they will.”
