Case of Presidential
Between November 1995 and March 1997, Lewinsky claims she had nine sexual encounters with Clinton, none of which involved intercourse. Since she spent so much time with President Clinton, Monica’s bosses decided to move her to the Pentagon in April 1996. Coworker Linda Tripp began covertly recording phone calls between Lewinsky and Tripp in September 1997 after she confessed to having a connection with the president.
The next month, in an affidavit given in the Paula Jones case, Monica denied having ever been romantically involved with Clinton. As the independent counsel for President Clinton, Kenneth Starr started looking into the Clintons’ Whitewater real estate ventures, Tripp gave Linda’s tapes to Starr.
He persuaded Lewinsky to save any gifts Clinton had given her, including the blue garment that held evidence of a sexual encounter. While Clinton initially denied having a connection with Monica Lewinsky while testifying under oath and in a press conference in January 1998, Clinton altered his tune after Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III obtained the blue dress. A grand jury heard testimony from both Clinton and Lewinsky, and the Office of the Independent Counsel granted transactional immunity to Monica Lewinsky.
