Career
Richie began performing with the Commodores in 1968, first as a singer and then as a saxophonist. In 1968, the band signed a one-album contract with Atlantic Records before relocating to Motown. It was the songs “Brick House,” “Machine Gun,” “Easy,” and “Three Times a Lady” that made the Commodores a popular R&B band. Toward the end of the 1970s, Richie started writing songs for other artists on a commission basis. In 1980, Kenny Rogers had a number one hit with “Lady,” a song he penned. A duet with Diana Ross, “Endless Love” was Richie’s theme song for the 1981 film. An Academy Award nomination was given to this one of Motown’s most popular songs. With this accomplishment, Richie decided to pursue a solo career.

He launched his first solo album “Lionel Richie” in 1982, and it contained three hits: “Truly,” “You Are,” and, of course, the title track “My Love.” It sounded a lot like the Commodores in terms of style. After peaking at number three, this album went on to sell over four million copies worldwide. It was released in 1983 and sold twice as many albums as “Lionel Richie,” which he had previously published in the same year. Also winning two Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for “Can’t Slow Down,” was “Can’t Stop.” He performed at the 1984 Summer Olympics closing ceremony in Los Angeles with “All Night Long,” one of the album’s most popular tracks.

Hello, Stuck on You, Running with the Night, and Penny Lover were just a few of Richie’s many top 10 songs from the 1980s. ” For the 1981 film “Endless Love,” he penned and recorded the song’s title track. A duet with Diana Ross, it was nominated for Best Original Song at the 1982 Academy Awards.
Said You, Said Me” from the 1985 film “White Nights” was written and performed by him. In the United States, the song was the number one single for four weeks and won Best Original Song at the Oscars. On “We Are the World,” Richie worked with Michael Jackson. Despite the success of his first three albums in the 1990s, Richie’s subsequent releases were not as popular. There have been six Richie singles in the UK Top 40 since 2004. “Just Go” was released in 2009. “Tuskegee,” Richie’s tenth studio album, was released on March 26, 2012.

Personal Life
His college girlfriend, Brenda Harvey, wed him on October 18, 1975, at the age of 22. Sheila E’s niece’s daughter, Nicole Camille Escovedo, was informally adopted by the couple, along with a member of Lionel Richie’s band. At the age of nine, Richie made Nicole’s adoption official and legal.
In 1986, Richie began an affair with Diane Alexander. Brenda Harvey, his longtime wife, remained by his side. Following an 18-year marriage, Richie and Harvey decided to part ways in 1993. Alexander and Richie wed in December of 1995. The couple has a son and a daughter, named Miles and Sofia. In the beginning of 2004, they decided to part ways.
