Brian Wilson was born to Audree Neva and Murry Wilson on June 20, 1942, in Inglewood, California. He has a mixed Western European background and is the eldest of three sons, along with brothers Dennis and Carl. His parents were aware of and promoted his musical ability from an early age, noticing that he could remember song tunes as young as one. When he was seven years old, he joined the local church choir and continued to sing for numerous gatherings until he entered school. He also began singing with these two boys, teaching them harmony parts, and he developed a strong interest in playing harmonic sounds on the keyboard.
Wilson began performing in public while still in high school, collaborating with cousin Mike Love, and went on to study music and psychology at El Camino College in Los Angeles in 1960. He wrote his first song the next year, “Surfer Girl,” which went on to become a top ten success in 1963.
A career in music
The first performance by the Pendletones, later known as the Beach Boys, took place in 1961. Wilson, his brothers Carl and Dennis, cousin Mike Love, and Al Jardine, a college acquaintance, were among the five men.
“Surfin,” a local smash, was produced by Wilson and Love. Candix Records changed the band’s name to the Beach Boys after hearing it. Wilson’s father, who also served as the band’s manager, terminated the contract and assisted the band in signing a deal with Capitol Records. “409” and “Surfin Safari,” two national hits, were released under the label.
In 1963, Wilson and the Beach Boys began recording new material for Capitol Records, and “Surfin’ USA” became their first top ten success. Wilson was highly involved in the recording process, negotiating to produce the Beach Boys’ debut album and agreeing to use double tracking for all vocals, giving the group its signature deep sound.
Wilson went on to record Surfer Girl in 1963 and Little Deuce Coupe a year later. Jan and Dean, the Castells, and the Honeys were among the first artists Wilson produced. After having a panic attack on an airplane, he resigned from the Beach Boys’ tour schedule in 1964. Onstage, Wilson was replaced by Glen Campbell, then Bruce Johnston.
Wilson began experimenting with cannabis and other psychedelic drugs in 1965, and his music was impacted by his experiences. Wilson continued to push himself, most notably with the Beach Boys’ album Pet Sounds, which has received widespread praise and is frequently mistaken for a Brian Wilson solo album. Wilson’s Beach Boys’ song Good Vibrations became the group’s third number-one hit in the United States not long after.
