Final Playing Years

Russell became the NBA‘s first black head coach after Red Auerbach, the Celtics’ longtime coach, stepped down prior to the 1966-67 season. The following season would be the first real defeat of Russell’s career, as the Philadelphia 76ers and Wilt Chamberlain destroyed the Celtics.

While playing in his penultimate season, Russell was able to come back and win a game. Once again, the Celtics faced the 76ers in the Eastern Division Finals with a 3-1 disadvantage in the first game. That being said, the club fought back to win the next three games in stunning comeback fashion. Russell’s tenth championship came as a result of the Celtics’ victory over the Lakers in the NBA Finals.

When Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated, Russell felt convinced that he was wasting his time on a sport as minor as basketball, despite his rising success in his final season. This led to his weight gain, missed NBA coach meetings, and a lack of motivation on the floor. His team needed him to rally, and he did just that, guiding them to another NBA Finals appearance against the Lakers. Despite the close call, Russell was able to win his 11th championship in the past 13 years.

After-Career Opportunities

From 1973 to 1977, Russell coached the Seattle SuperSonics, and from 1987 to 1988, the Sacramento Kings, both in the NBA. Not a lot of progress was made in either position. Russell also became a vegetarian, took up golf, and worked as a colour commentator for CBS and TBS. He was the host of “Saturday Night Live” in 1979. As a near-hermit in Washington state’s Mercer Island, he made few public appearances in the 1990s.

Russell was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame’s inaugural class in 2006 for his contributions to college basketball. He was awarded honorary doctorates from Suffolk University and Harvard University in the following year. Besides the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the FIBA Hall of Fame, and the Basketball Hall of Fame, Russell has been honoured with numerous more honours during the course of his career.
