Bill Gates is a prominent American entrepreneur, philanthropist, former chairman and CEO of software giant Microsoft, and author. Bill Gates is worth $133.8 billion at the time of this writing. Bill Gates has dominated global wealth for the better part of the last two decades. In July of 2017, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos passed him as the world’s richest person, relegating him to second place. He is now regularly ranked among the top five wealthiest people on the planet.
As you may know, Bill Gates is widely regarded as one of the earliest and most influential entrepreneurs in the PC industry, having co-founded software giant Microsoft with fellow PC industry pioneer Paul Allen. The current percentage of Microsoft stock he owns is less than 1.3%. Over the years, he has unloaded tens of billions of dollars worth of Microsoft stock. With the money from his sales, Gates established Cascade Investment LLC, through which he has invested in numerous additional businesses.
Early Life
On October 28, 1955, William Henry Gates III entered this world in Seattle, Washington. As a kid, Gates endured cruel treatment. When his mother inquired as to his whereabouts, he would respond, “I’m thinking,” before retreating to his room. At the ripe old age of 13, he enrolled in the exclusive Lakeside prep school and coded his first computer program.
In his first year at Lakeside, while he was in eighth grade, the Mother’s Club had raised enough money to provide each student with a Teletype Model 33 ASR terminal and access to a GE computer. In time, Gates found that he enjoyed using BASIC on the GE computer. His first computer program was a tic-tac-toe game he wrote himself.
The game was played by humans versus a computer. When Gates, Allen, Weiland, and Evans were detected taking advantage of OS vulnerabilities to gain unmetered access to the school computer, they were expelled. With the goal of making a living, four students at Lakeside High School established the Lakeside Programmers Club.
After their time away from the computer was up, the guys bargained for more time by offering to find and fix software flaws. Gates began learning programming languages like Fortran, Lisp, and machine code that were used by the computer itself.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index shows that Gates’s net worth has dropped by $25.8 billion so far this year, bringing it down to $112 billion. Even though he was the fourth richest person at the start of the year, Microsoft founder Bill Gates has since dropped to fifth.
