Early Life
William Stephen Belichick was born on April 16, 1952, in Nashville, Tennessee. Bill was brought up by his mother Jeannette and his father Steve, an assistant football coach at the United States Naval Academy. The legendary coach Bill Edwards is his godfather to Bill. Belichick used to tag along with his dad Steve to team meetings, where he would watch his dad analyze films and plan plays.
By the time he was a teenager, Bill Belichick was a regular at the team’s practices and knew his way around the different offensive and defensive schemes. Belichick participated in two sports while at Annapolis High School: football and lacrosse.
He was accepted to Wesleyan University in Connecticut a year after graduating from Phillips Academy in Massachusetts. Career
First coaching wideouts and tight ends in 1977 after being hired as an assistant special teams coach for the Detroit Lions in 1976. Bill joined the Denver Broncos in 1978, first as a defensive assistant and then as an assistant special teams coach. Starting in 1980, he coached linebackers after previously serving in the same capacity in 1979 for the New York Giants.
Belichick joined the Giants as defensive coordinator in 1985; the squad went on to win the championship in 1987 and 1991; Bill’s defensive game plan for Super Bowl XXV was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Belichick became head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 1991 and remained in that role until 1995; when the Browns were relocated to Baltimore, Bill was told that he would be coaching the new team but was instead dismissed.
Belichick began his coaching career in 1996 as an assistant head coach and defensive backs coach for the New England Patriots. In 1997, he took over as interim head coach for the New York Jets, and after Bill Parcells was hired as head coach, he was promoted to assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. Although Parcells had planned for Belichick to take over as head coach in 1999, Bill quit the day after he was introduced as the new leader of the team during a press conference.
In 2000, he was promoted to head coach and general manager for the New England Patriots. After the “Spygate” incident with the New England Patriots and the New York Jets in 2007, Bill had to pay a $500,000 fine. In addition to the $250,000 punishment, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stripped the Patriots of their first-round selection pick in the next year’s draught. With Belichick at the helm, the Patriots have been more successful than ever before, winning the Super Bowl an unprecedented nine times (in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2015, 2017, and 2019).
Personal Life
After marrying Deborah Clarke in 1977 and having three children together (Amanda, Stephen, and Brian), Bill and Deborah Clarke divorced in 2006. In 2004, Belichick and his wife Sharon Shenocca split up after rumors spread that he was having an affair with a Giants receptionist.
Stephen and Bryan have both worked for the New England Patriots, and this is not a secret. Linda Holliday is the Executive Director of the Bill Belichick Fund, which supports people, groups, and communities with a passion for football and lacrosse through grants, coaching, and mentorship. Bill and Linda entered into a partnership that same year. Amanda took after her father and played basketball at Wesleyan before leading the women’s lacrosse team at Holy Cross.

Credentials and Achievements
Belichick is the only active head coach to be selected for the 2019 National Football League 100th Anniversary All-Time Team and has been voted NFL Coach of the Year three times (2003, 2007, and 2010) by the Associated Press.
