Bennie Gordon Thompson (born January 28, 1948) is an American politician who has represented Mississippi’s 2nd congressional district in the United States House of Representatives since 1993. He is the Mississippi delegation’s dean in Congress.

Bennie Thompson, the son of Will Thompson and Annie (Lauris) Thompson, was born in Bolton, Mississippi. He graduated from Hinds County Agricultural High School after attending public schools in Hinds County. In 1972, he graduated from Jackson State University with a Master of Science in educational administration. In Madison, Mississippi, Thompson worked as a teacher. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of Thompson on February 16, 2021, accusing Donald Trump of inciting violence at the US Capitol assault on January 6, 2021. The lawsuit was filed three days after Trump was acquitted of inciting the riot in which one person, Ashli Babbitt, died in the second Senate impeachment trial.
Following Trump’s acquittal, Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell said in a speech that he voted to acquit Trump because he believes the Senate cannot try a former president, but that he supports legal action against him, saying, “We have a criminal justice system in this country.” We’re dealing with civil cases. Former presidents aren’t exempt from either. Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, as well as the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, are named as defendants in the lawsuit. Trump, Giuliani, and the hate groups, according to the lawsuit, violated the 1871 Third Enforcement Act by preventing Congress from carrying out its constitutional duties “by the use of force, intimidation, and threat” in the 2021 United States Electoral College vote count (also known as the Ku Klux Klan Act).

Tenure
Thompson ran in the special election to succeed Mike Espy, who resigned from the US House of Representatives in Mississippi’s 2nd congressional district to become Secretary of Agriculture. In the March 30, 1993, primary election, he came in second, with 28 percent of the vote, behind Republican Hayes Dent. He then received 55 percent of the vote in the April 13 runoff, defeating Dent. In 1994, he was re-elected to the seat for the 12th time. Only twice has he faced serious opposition, in 2002 and 2004, when journalist Clinton LeSueur held him to 55% and 58 percent, respectively.

Thompson meets with Democrats from Mississippi
Following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, Thompson became a vocal proponent for the Gulf Coast. He pushed for accountability at FEMA and a thorough review of the role of the Red Cross in disasters from his position on the Homeland Security Committee.
He also went after waste, fraud, and abuse in hurricane contracting and demanded that small and Gulf Coast businesses be given preference in the recovery and rebuilding of the affected states. Thompson is a co-founder of the House of Representatives’ bipartisan Gulf Coast Recovery and Rebuilding Caucus.
