An “inverse vaccine” created by University of Chicago researchers can treat autoimmune conditions like numerous sclerosis and type 1 diabetes without weakening the body’s defenses as a whole. The vaccination stops the autoimmune reaction, in which the immune system unintentionally targets healthy tissues, by erasing the immune system’s damaging memory of particular chemicals.
Pritzker Molecular Engineering researchers worked with Prof. Jeffrey Hubbell to show that their substance can stop the autoimmune response connected to several sclerosis.
