The Los Angeles Unified School District is bringing an end to a policy that has been in effect for more than two years.
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has decided to withdraw its COVID-19 vaccine requirement for employees and affiliated individuals
The Los Angeles Unified School District expressed gratitude towards the human resources and medical teams, as well as university partners, for their ongoing support and direction throughout this process. Los Angeles Unified School District affirmed its commitment to adhering to the guidelines set by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and pledged to continually review and update protocols to ensure the well-being of everyone within the school communities.
This mandate had been implemented in August 2021
However, on January 10, 2023, more than 20 present and former members of the school’s Police Department filed a lawsuit claiming that scientific evidence demonstrates that vaccination does not guarantee immunity from the virus. They argued that the district failed to accommodate their religious beliefs and enforced the vaccination policy at their expense.
In 2021, the Board of Education also endorsed a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for students, responding to concerning rates of infection and hospitalization. Yet, this mandate encountered legal obstacles. Its enforcement was postponed until at least July 2023, and ultimately, it never went into effect.
