Only 2 weeks into the new school year, administrators in Kentucky have decided to cancel classes for the remaining time of the week “because of staff and student illness.”
On Tuesday, August 22, the district of Lee County made an announcement announcing the cancellation of all in-person classrooms, extra-curricular activities, and games for the balance of the week.
According to Scott Lockard, the Kentucky River District’s public health director, there was a spike in COVID-19 cases across the district.
However, the district’s choice to temporarily lock its gates was not only motivated by COVID-19.
Individuals who tested negative for COVID are however showing up positive for additional respiratory illnesses, according to Lockard. The high rate of attendance in Lee County made it necessary for them to decide to cancel school for the remaining time of the week.
