For someone with dementia, Halloween can be a source of stress and anxiety due to the impact of the condition on the brain

This includes playing calming music, offering verbal and physical reassurance, and engaging in quiet activities like reading. It may also be helpful to someone with dementia to explain the nature of Halloween to the individual.

To create a more comfortable environment for someone with dementia, avoid using interactive or frightening decorations that could cause distress. Instead, opt for less scary items like pumpkins and autumn leaves. Additionally, consider adapting the celebration to cater to the specific needs of your loved one, replacing sugary treats with healthier options to prevent agitation.

While it’s still possible to embrace the festive spirit, be cautious when giving out candy to trick-or-treaters for someone with dementia

It’s recommended not to leave your loved one alone during this time, as the continuous presence of costumed strangers can be unsettling. If someone with dementia wishes to participate in handing out candy, offer assistance or consider leaving candy outside with a note for visitors.

Prioritize safety by keeping both inside and outside lights on. Avoid inviting trick-or-treaters into the house, as this may lead to disorientation and potential safety concerns for someone with dementia. However, a small gathering of close friends, family, or neighbors for refreshments can be a more manageable way to enjoy the holiday, if your loved one expresses interest.
