Emergency room doctors in the Bronx are sounding the alarm over a concerning uptick in young students, some as young as elementary age, arriving at the ER in the morning exhibiting symptoms of cannabis ingestion.
Dr. Blanca Grand, an emergency room doctor physician at St. Barnabas Hospital, expressed her worry as she tends to these cases
Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain are common complaints from these young patients who admit to consuming marijuana before heading to school. Dr. Grand, an emergency room doctor emphasized, “They’re at school and they’re exhibiting some symptoms.”
A staggering 39 smoke shops have been identified within a 1.6-mile radius of the South Bronx, raising concerns among local high school students. Alexa Pacheco, a student, voiced her observation of the pervasive presence of these smoke shops, highlighting their ubiquity.
Itzel Robles, another student, echoed the sentiment of alarm, expressing concern about the prevalence of such establishments in their neighborhood
This trend has sparked significant apprehension among emergency room doctors, who are urging increased awareness and action regarding the potential influence of these smoke shops on young students’ health and well-being. The community and authorities are being called upon to address this issue promptly to safeguard the health of the Bronx’s youth.
