Youth Allowance Boost in 2025! See If You’re Eligible for the Extra $19.80

Young Australians receiving Youth Allowance will see a welcome boost in their payments starting January 1, 2025. As part of the government’s regular indexation process, payments will increase to help students and job seekers keep up with rising living costs. But who qualifies, and how much more will recipients actually get? Here’s what you need to know.

How Much is the Increase?

The Youth Allowance payment increase will range between $17.30 and $30.60 per fortnight, depending on an individual’s living situation.

  • Single recipients over 18, living at home will receive an extra $17.30, bringing their new total payment to $477.10 per fortnight.
  • Single recipients living away from home will get an additional $24.30, increasing their payment to $670.30 per fortnight.
  • Single recipients with children will see the highest increase of $30.60, taking their new total to $845.80 per fortnight.

This adjustment ensures that payments align with inflation and cost-of-living changes.

Who is Eligible?

To qualify for Youth Allowance, applicants must meet these criteria:

  • Be between 16 and 24 years old
  • Be an Australian resident
  • Be either a full-time student, apprentice, or actively seeking work

The allowance is also income and assets tested. If you’re under 22 and dependent, Centrelink considers your parents’ income. The parental income threshold has increased by $2,555, meaning parents can now earn up to $65,189 annually before their child’s payment is reduced.

How to Apply

If you think you’re eligible, applying is simple. You can submit an application through the Services Australia website or visit a Centrelink service center. Be prepared to provide details about your income, parental income (if applicable), and other financial circumstances.

Why is This Happening?

Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth highlighted that these payment increases are essential to helping young people manage financial pressures. “Through indexation, payments are adjusted in line with cost-of-living changes to ensure people have more money in their pockets,” she said.

However, advocacy groups argue that the increase isn’t enough. Jay Coonan, a spokesperson for the Antipoverty Centre, said, “Indexation means nothing when people relying on Centrelink are still living hundreds of dollars below the poverty line.”

What This Means for You

If you’re a Youth Allowance recipient, this increase could provide a small but helpful boost to your finances. While not a massive raise, it’s a step towards keeping payments in line with inflation. Make sure to check your eligibility and apply for any additional support available.
