Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is pursuing a risky game. The Speaker is now promoting a risky strategy after months of neglecting to propose solutions to the coming default deadline. He suggested a package of far-right measures that could severely harm middle-class Americans in exchange for a deal to increase the debt ceiling for a single year.
McCarthy has been holding the nation’s finances hostage with a severe MAGA wish list rather than acting responsibly and increasing the debt ceiling, as Republicans did under President Trump 3 times without support.
McCarthy and House Republicans are willing to allow the United States to fail on our debts to obtain what they seek as the group that declares to be “fiscally sensible.”
Although it took him more than 100 days to compose, his extreme views are not unexpected. His plan will reduce the cash available to local communities for medical facilities, emergency personnel, schools, and benefits for veterans. Additionally, it would eliminate student loan forgiveness, severely scale back our initiatives to battle climate change, cut social programs and security nets, and eliminate federal workers—just the leading edge of the iceberg.
