Who’s Getting Their SNAP Benefits Right Now? Here’s the Scoop

This week, millions of Americans are receiving their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, which help families afford groceries. But with updates to distribution schedules and some new rules in place, it’s important to stay informed. Here’s a quick guide to what you need to know.

When Will You Get Your SNAP Benefits?

Every state has its own schedule for distributing SNAP benefits, so the exact date you receive yours depends on where you live. States often base their schedules on factors like the last digit of your SNAP identification number or the first letter of your last name.

For example, in Georgia, benefits for those with ID numbers ending in 90-99 were sent out earlier this week on January 23. To find out your exact distribution date, check with your state’s SNAP office or look online at the USDA website.

Good News: Benefits Have Increased!

To help families deal with rising grocery costs, the USDA introduced a Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for SNAP benefits. This adjustment took effect in October 2024 and applies through September 2025.

Here’s what it means:

  • A family of four in most of the U.S. can now receive up to $975 per month in benefits.
  • If you live in higher-cost areas like Alaska, Hawaii, or Guam, your maximum benefit amount is even higher.

This increase is designed to make it easier for families to afford essentials like fresh produce, dairy, and other groceries.

New Rules for Some Adults

If you’re an adult without dependents, there’s a new rule you need to know. Previously, able-bodied adults without dependents (often called ABAWDs) aged 18-49 had to meet work requirements to keep receiving benefits for more than three months. Now, that age range has been raised to include people up to age 54.

The rule says you must work or participate in an approved training program for at least 80 hours per month. However, there are exceptions for veterans, homeless individuals, and people aging out of foster care.

Protect Your Benefits from Scammers

Unfortunately, SNAP benefits have been a target for fraud in recent months. Thieves have found ways to steal benefits from Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards. To protect your funds, many states now let you “lock” your EBT card when you’re not using it. Check with your state SNAP office to see if this feature is available.

How to Stay on Top of SNAP Updates

If you want to make sure you’re getting your full benefits or have questions about changes, here are a few steps you can take:

  1. Contact your local SNAP office for personalized support.
  2. Check the USDA website for updates on payments, rules, and benefit increases.
  3. Be vigilant about securing your EBT card to avoid fraud.

SNAP is a vital lifeline for many households, and keeping track of the latest news can help you maximize your benefits. If you’re unsure about your eligibility or need help applying, your state’s SNAP office is the best resource.
