House taxpayers on Mare Island in Vallejo were allegedly forced to pay an additional tax that gets them nothing in return. The taxpayers will be pleading their case at a budget hearing at City Hall.
Vallejo took over Mare Island Naval Shipyard in the year 2000. Homebuilder Lennar constructed 322 new houses after five years. To pay for fire protection and police, the city and developer agreed on an additional special tax.
But in 2009, the city filed for bankruptcy. Ever since, to get service from them, Mare Island taxpayers have been paying an extra $2,300 annually that other property owners in the city don’t have to pay.
