With winter temperatures dropping fast, New York has launched a major support initiative for seniors and low-income households struggling to stay warm. The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is offering up to $996 in direct payments to help cover heating costs. This move aims to ensure that vulnerable residents, particularly seniors over 60, can manage their energy bills without added stress.
What Is HEAP?
HEAP is a federally-funded program designed to help low- and middle-income families pay for home heating. The program doesn’t just offer regular benefits—it also includes emergency support and assistance for repairing or replacing broken heating systems.
The 2024-2025 HEAP program has increased its benefits to better reflect rising living costs, making it even easier for eligible households to receive financial relief.
Who Can Apply?
New York seniors and families must meet specific criteria to qualify:
- Income Requirements: A household of four can earn up to $6,390 per month or $76,681 per year to qualify. This is a higher limit compared to last year, reflecting the state’s response to inflation.
- Vulnerable Residents Priority: The program prioritizes households that include seniors (age 60+), young children (under 6), or individuals with permanent disabilities.
This focus ensures that those who need help the most get it.
How to Apply
Getting HEAP benefits is easy:
- Online Applications: Visit the state’s portal at ny.gov/heat to apply quickly and conveniently.
- In-Person or Mail: Applications can also be submitted at local departments of social services. Seniors can get help applying through their local office for the aging.
Extra Help Is Available
HEAP isn’t just a one-time payment. Additional support is available to those facing emergencies:
- Emergency Assistance: Beginning January 2, 2025, households experiencing utility shut-offs or running out of fuel can apply for emergency HEAP benefits to keep the heat running.
- Heating Equipment Repairs and Replacements: Homeowners can receive up to $4,000 for repairs and $8,000 for equipment replacement if their heating system breaks down.
Governor Hochul: “No One Should Have to Choose Between Heat and Food”
Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of HEAP, stating:
“New Yorkers should not have to choose between heating their home or putting food on the table. We’re offering critical financial assistance to protect vulnerable households as the weather gets colder.”
Apply Today for a Warm and Safe Winter
New York residents eligible for HEAP are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to make sure they receive their payments before the coldest months hit. With up to $996 on the line, this program can be a lifeline for those in need.
